The Shimba Hills National Reserve is a heterogeneous habitat of exotic plants, scrubland, grassland and one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa. It is known for its great diversity of birds and butterflies. This forest is also an ideal habitat for leopard, buffalo, antelope, giraffe and elephant and is home to the last intact herd of the indigenous sable antelope in Kenya.

Exciting Rainforest
A wooden treetop trail leads directly from the lodge into the forest. A plaza at the end allows guests to enjoy a sundowner drink or a romantic candlelit dinner in the rainforest, watching waterbucks, bushbucks, monitor lizards and ospreys in their natural environment. Squirrels will come for breakfast and bush babies for dinner, waiting for their chance to be pampered. An unforgettable experience.
Our proposal
Day 1: From Mombasa or Coast to Shimba Hills
The tour starts from Mombasa airport or your hotel on the coast. Already on the way to the Shimba Hills Lodge you go on a game drive. Shimba Hills Lodge is the only tree lodge on the coast. Situated directly at a waterhole, there is always something to see.
Another highlight is the bush walk to the Sheldrick Falls (approx. 2 hours, sturdy shoes recommended).
We have seen very large monitor lizards and mysterious genet in the trees as well as cute bushbabies. During dinner you will be accompanied by the so-called “bush concert” – the nocturnal voices of the rainforest, which will also accompany you to sleep…
Day 2: Shimba Hills and back to Mombasa or coast
Early in the morning we start with another game drive to discover more of the wildlife in the park. Back at the lodge you will have a hearty breakfast and perhaps a visit from a squirrel – at least that’s what happened to us. You then go on a walk in the surroundings of the lodge. With mindfulness you will feel the magic of the rainforest even more, an exciting jungle experience. Lunch will be served on the veranda of the lodge and in the late afternoon we will take you back to your hotel on the coast.
